- Course Description
Examines health as it relates to gender/sexuality and to the roles and status of men and women and sexual and gender minorities in society. It explores public policy decisions related to medical research and practices. Topics may include research about adult sexuality and personal health, contraception, sexual abuse, gender-specific diseases, and sexually transmitted diseases.
This course focuses on 1) how gender and sex influence vulnerabilities to various health-related problems and access to healthcare; 2) the cost/benefits of gender inclusion in the practice of medical research and practice; 3) medicalization of sex and gender; 4) gender and intersectional analyses for particular topics in medicine/health (e.g., HIV/AIDS, diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction, mental health); 5) medical interventions on bodies (e.g., transgender, disorders of sex development/intersexuality, and cosmetic genital surgeries) that serve to inscribe gender on the body. Student input and interests will help shape the final content of the course.
