Mission

The understanding of gender is evolving

Intersectionality + Transformation

We live in a time of rapidly evolving information about gender, with its significance now recognized as having an impact on nearly every dimension of life. As a result, many previously held beliefs are shifting.

Our courses examine the social understanding of gender issues as they relate to various dimensions of life—sexuality, the body, race and class, business and politics, health, developing societies, artistic movements, academic institutions and knowledge, sports and leisure, law, the media, and many other areas of interest.

Research + Pedagogy

Gender studies has developed as an innovative area of research and pedagogy, with the mission of advancing cultural understandings of gender structures and representations, and their impact on knowledge and policy.

Our courses are interdisciplinary in content and approach. This means gender studies courses at Indiana University explore issues related to women and gender across academic disciplines.

Our intellectual goal

The intellectual goal of Gender Studies at IU is to develop new approaches to knowledge about women, men, and gender-related issues. Recognizing gender as a fundamental category of social and cultural analysis, we work across the disciplines of history, science, cultural studies, literature, and the social sciences to develop interdisciplinary perspectives from which to study the diversity of human experience.

Gender—the social meaning of the distinction between the sexes—is considered as it intersects with race, class, ethnicity, nationality, and transnational movements. Our work transforms traditional disciplines and fields of study through innovative consideration of a range of theories, methods, perspectives, and frameworks.
