The culture of the Gender Studies department is enriched by the interdisciplinary nature of the program, proximity to resources such as the Kinsey Institute, and the vitality of research about topics of intense public interest today.

The Gender Studies Graduate Association hosts brown bag events, with presentations and conversations about professionalization and various aspects of the Ph.D. process. Events are led by faculty or advanced Ph.D. candidates. Previous topics include academic conferences, conference paper proposals, and publishing in academic journals.

Our students work as an associate instructor for one of our twelve full time faculty, starting their first semester at IU. Advanced Ph.D. candidates may work as research assistants, helping faculty members develop cutting edge research for publication.

Beyond campus, there are many opportunities in Bloomington for gender inquiry and advocacy, through connections with local social service organizations and venues for the arts and sciences.
