- Course Description
This course focuses on visual and literary representations of Black women in 20th and 21st century literature and visual media. We will interrogate the connections between societal and cultural expectations, Black women’s lived experiences, and the politics of representation. We will pay particular attention to the ways in which Black women writers use writing as a praxis, i.e. to build community, to work through trauma, and to document their shared and discrete experiences.
